Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
This book employs magical realism to illustrate ideas as a contagion, with the overbearing control of the Catholic Church representing government. I did not enjoy this book very much. Magical realism insults my intelligence and breaks my power to suspend my disbelief. I would rather recommend Marquez’s 100 Years of Solitude. At least in that book, you grow fond of characters and enjoy dozens of mini stories between the greater story of the decline of a family over several generations.
